Make sure when you pre tin your connections on the pot you use a minimal amount of solder because if the solder flows into the pot it will destroy it. This typically occurs from the center hole.
Also be sure to trim the leads of the wires you are connecting the pot to. Leave about an 1/8th of an inch lead stripped because if the lead is too long on the wire that connects to the middle hole it will drive into the potentiometer and destroy it.
